Kathak Gurus

The “guru-shishya parampara” or teacher-student tradition has come down the generations from ancient Indian civilizations. The evolution of Kathak is a combined effort of several such inspiring gurus and their shishyas who have explored various facets of this dance form to embellish it and make it a much-loved and enjoyable artistic performance the world over. Taal Academy has the privilege and honour to be influenced by renowned Kathak Gurus.

  • Shilpa Save

Shilpa, the founder and teacher of Taal Academy, has been trained for over 25 years in Kathak dance.

Founder of Taal Academy, Shilpa has had the unique opportunity to train in Kathak dance under three outstanding Gurus—Shri Gopikrishnaji, Smt. Rama Devi and Smt. Shambhavi Dandekar. She has also completed Kathak Alankar (Master’s Degree) under the guidance of her Guru Smt. Shambhavi Dandekar from the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Mumbai.

She has trained in the Lucknow style of Kathak dance which is characterized by graceful movements, elegance and natural poise with dance. Abhinaya, concern for movement and shape, as well as creative improvisations are the hallmarks of this style. Shilpa considers herself to be a continuing student of dance. All her students look to her for guidance and inspiration, whether it is in the depth and subtlety of her Abhinaya, the dynamic rigor of her Nritya, or the complex rhythmic patterns of her choreography.

  • Guru Shri Gopikrishnaji

Padmashri Gopi Krishnaji was one of the most outstanding exponents of the Banaras Gharana of Kathak. His performances were known for unique interpretations, distinct showmanship, perfect tempo, and high creativity. From solo dance ballets to group choreography, dance dramas and film song sequences, Gopiji made an indelible mark on the history of Kathak.

  • Guru Smt. Rama Didi

Her contribution to the Lucknow Gharana may not be as highly acclaimed as that of her illustrious spouse, but as we all know, behind every successful man is a successful woman!
